Cyber crime cases on rise in Bangalore

BANGALORE: Not long after it became the ‘suicide capital’ of the country, Bangalore is surging ahead to claim another tittle as the cyber crime capital of the nation. Though the city stands at the top five position for cyber crime, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2010 statistics, fraudsters are going all out pursuing ‘virtual prey’, especially in banking sector.

“As banks are increasing online presence, customers have become more susceptible to cyber crime,” M Palanisami, banking ombudsman for Karnataka said. Speaking to Express, he pointed out that ‘net banking’ related crimes are on the rise. He shared that many new generation private banks were offering net banking without fire wall protection.

“These days lot of mails are orginating seeking personal information such as account number and Personal Identification Number (PIN) and many customers are falling prey to this,” he said and added that some of these ‘duped’ customers were highly educated and some of them were even IT professionals.

Taking the opportunity to enlighten the people, he said that no bank would seek information over the internet and no sensitive information should be shared online. Citing that the Real Time Graft System (RTGS) was one such fool-proof system used by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), he informed that this system had never even been attacked.

When asked why this system was not a standard practice amongst all financial institutions in the country, he clarified that the RBI cannot get into ‘micro management’ to place such systems in all banks operating net banks.

Palanisamy said, “The banks have to ensure that customers are not vulnerable to such frauds.” He also said that the number of complaints related to banking was on the rise and there was an average of 7 complaints per month.

Cyber crimes on the rise in Pink City

JAIPUR: With the city going hi-tech, cyber crime cases are also on the rise. Jaipur police lodged a total of 27 cases in 2010. The figures of the national crime record bureau ( NCRB) show no case was registered under IT Act in the city in 2009. Rajasthan stands at number 4 in terms of cyber crime cases in the country with a total of 52 cases registered with the police in 2010.

"Jaipur is one of the most vulnerable cities in the country as people here are generally ignorant," says Hitesh Choudhary, a cyber security expert.

He added that more than the police, the residents are to be blamed.

"Passwords are usually very 'weak'. There is no concept of 'penetration tests' in the city in which IT systems are challenged by professional hackers and then the loopholes are rectified. Besides, pirated software programmes and other factors have also added to the problem," said Choudhary.

Under the police commissionerate system, a separate cell to deal with cyber crimes was to be formed, but it is yet to see the light of the day.

While residents of the Pink City are becoming victims of cyber crimes, the police are unable to help due to lack of knowledge and resources.

A senior police officer said the police have few resources to solve such crimes.

"Each police district in the city has a special crime cell which deals with cyber crime as well as other organised crimes," said the officer. He added that under the commissionerate system, a separate cell for dealing with cyber crimes is proposed, but it might take some time.

In order to curb cyber crimes, the state police had earlier planned to set up cyber police stations across the state and first such police stations was likely to come up in Jaipur. However, this has not been done.
